In ancient Roman religion and myth, Janus is the god of beginnings and transitions, thence also of gates, doors, passages, endings and time. He is usually depicted as having two faces, since he looks to the future and to the past. Some authors also regard him as a solar god. In this mosaic, he's represented in balance and harmony with Jana, the lunar goddess, who represents his feminine side. January, the opening month of the year is named after Janus.
