I completed this work in April 2025. It is based on a draft from 2006. Back then, I called the painting "Lord, forgive them, for..." I have since renamed it Jesus' last words before his death: "It is finished."
An expressionist depiction of the crucifixion of Jesus.
In the center, Jesus hangs on the cross. His body is weakened, his posture expressing pain and devotion.
To the left below the cross stands Mary, the mother of Jesus, in a praying or mourning pose. To the right, Mary Magdalene stands with her head bowed, expressive and lost in grief.
Warm yellows and reds around the cross symbolize light, sacrifice, and redemption, while the cool blues and greens around the edges suggest darkness and pain. The coarse, impasto painting technique enhances the drama of the scene.
Oil on canvas using a palette knife technique, 2006 / April 2025.
