Sometimes I have an idea, and then I have to create the painting because I'm so curious to see if it could work and what it would look like. In this case the idea was to use subtly shifting shades of grey to black and keep moving the stencils along by 5mm each time. Half way through I realise it was a really bad idea because it takes so long, but I have to carry on because I want to see what it looks like. Part of what interests me in working in this way is that however careful and precise you are, little errors sneak in. And the repetitive use of the same stencils creates a build up of paint around the edges, so the stencils themselves change ever so slightly.
