As a young boy in Germany I spent endless hours with my friends roaming the nearby forests. I nearly added the adverb "aimlessly", but that would be misleading, because although there was no overt purpose to this activity, something far more important was at work here.
To us roaming the woods was not a means, but an end in itself. To experience and feel at all times the mystery and the ever-present mystique, and yes, danger, at least to our worried mothers, was a source of almost spiritual gratification, and one I will never forget.
