The full quote, by inspirational American artist Chuck Close, is actually this: "Inspiration is for amateurs. The rest of us just show up and get to work. If you wait around for the clouds to part and a bolt of lightning to strike you in the brain, you are not going to make an awful lot of work. All the best ideas come out of the process; they come out of the work itself.”
Close, who suffered a catastrophic artery collapse when he was 48 which left him paralysed from the waist down, continues to paint from a wheelchair, with a paintbrush strapped to his wrist. Andy Warhol puts Close's sentiment another way: "Why do people think artists are so special, it's just another job." Indeed.
