Inspired by a colorful ayahuasca vision, this painting offers a creative improvisation on Alice in Wonderland themes. Some of the figures—such as the hookah-smoking caterpillar, the jabberwokky, the white rabbit, the Cheshire cat, and the Queen of Hearts, and a mad hatter—were adapted from familiar Alice in Wonderland illustrations. Several of the other figures inside Alice’s Wonderland are my creative interpretation of characters in Lewis Carroll’s books. For example, my bandersnatch was based on the insect-eating aardwolf from Africa, and my walrus was inspired by a photo of a sumo wrestler playing a flute. I substituted a black egret for the Jubjub bird in the original story, and I added a few other anacronistic animals—a chameleon, a lobster, an iguana, and a hoatzin—for visual interest.
