This is Porth Oer (Whistling Sands) in North Wales. The children were very absorbed in the hunt for small fish, crabs and other sea creatures. The light reflecting off the sea created small points of brilliance. The father was as keen to explore the rock pools as any of the children. It was high summer but the beach was nearly empty. We had too much ice cream. When I came to painting the scene I wanted to paint big and bold colours, leaving the viewer to fill in the details. I wanted to viewer to feel the hot June sun.
