Original artwork description:

Amongst the hedgerows, the light grows dim, it's time to hurry home...

I based this artwork on a photo of my daughter in our garden at sunset, partially inspired by many eerie Misty covers of the past and a need to do something a bit different. I've used Gel Ink pens recently as a fun drawing medium, but this was the first time I'd undertaken something that bit more complex.

There were some real struggles along the way, I had to try many different brands of pens to get some of the colours I wanted into the picture. There were issues with incompatibility, as some of the pens refused to play nice with the other pens, and sometimes there were little mishaps along the way, smudges, colour runs, fades, etcetera. Finally, a finishing layer of varnish sealed the misbehaviour away.

The drawing is made with mixed-media, including gel pens, brush pens, inks and acrylics. It is supplied in a 40cm x 30cm mount to drop into a standard sized frame, and is finished with a professional matt varnish.

Materials used:

Mixed media - gel pens, brush pens, inks and acrylic.
