Exploring the Northumberland coast in search of my Northern Soul, I came to Goswick and spent a day making studies in watercolour and pencil. The striking sea defences still in place in the dunes made me think of the ludicrous attempt of modern day Britain to 'defend itself' against foreigners... Here the man made structures pitch themselves against the North Sea and the wide open sky.
I completed the piece after returning from a research trip to Amsterdam to study the Dutch landscape painters such as van Ruisdael and Cuyp.
The piece is mounted in the same style of simple white tray frame as 'Don't Mention The War'.
oil paint, oil based emulsion ground, artist-made birch ply braced panel
