This piece is part of my current obsession with all things watery. I love to paint shiny surfaces in all forms. I also love surface pattern.
Quite often family take beautiful photographs and you know it will make the most awesome painting. This was taken by my cousin’s husband Will Paige. (For whom I have full permission to make the painting). I have adapted the photo by making her bikini white and also by altering the water some what. I absolutely loved how the composition could work via a square but with a circular motion to it; sweeping around the painting with the energy and vibrancy of the water. You are lead into the painting by the sweeping downwards motion from the viewpoint and perspective too, ending in the swirling vortex of the fish and water. I named it ‘In or Out’ because you’re not quite sure what she is planning to do. It adds tension and drama.
Brushes
I use nice large filbert no. 10 brushes to block in my tones at the start and then get finer number 2 long filberts towards the end. I use one of my really old and more stubby large brushes to do translucent washes of colour for flattening off. As I need to scrub paint a bit at the dried layer of canvas. For water, I would never use a flat square ended brush. The mark making would be too angular.
I have a film of some of the process for this painting on my you tube channel.
