Imaginary Regatta
The painting is based on a drawing made of the recycling depot at Gillender Street, looking across the Bow Creek near Cody Dock. At the time of making the drawing and the painting, the whole area between the Blackwall Approach Rd and the canal had been designated for future development, there was a car breakers yard, scaffolding companies and a wood recycling company. Beyond the location afforded a view of Balfron Tower, and beyond that the Docklands financial cityscape. The narrative of the painting was an imaginary view of what activity there might be in the future when the housing development was completed, the canal is a fairly quiet place but I imagined that in the furore there would be dinghy sailing, in fact, further up the canal at Hackney Wick there is a well-established canal boat festival.
