Imagination is merely a transformation of perception. Transcendent consciousness translates the tree into an image, but it does so in a manner distinct from perceptual consciousness. Each type of consciousness presents its object, yet each does so in its unique way. Perception, for instance, presents its object as existing in reality. The image, too, involves an act of belief or a positional act.

Therefore, perceptions of things are original experiences in relation to all memories and fantasies. A picture becomes an image only for a consciousness that is capable of constituting images, bestowing the image with significance relative to a primary object.
