pen & ink on handmade thai mulberry paper(kada sa), deckled edge, 8 x 11 in., 20 x 28 cm.
This is part of a series of black & whites I did when I was living in Singapore. I can only suspect these guys aren’t doing this trade anymore.
Here I captured the ice cream vendor cart on busy posh Orchard road, although my version looks a bit more relaxed than the actual location.
The simple black & white has a special mood that colour paintings don’t capture, and allows the texture of the paper to stand out.
The paper I use is a traditional handmade mulberry paper from Thailand. It’s a thick parchment like paper, strong yet pliable. I have the paper made to this size to get the deckled edges which adds to the textural effect. This page has yellowed somewhat over the years adding to the parchment character. I tried to be as true to the color as possible.
The close up picture is to get a feel for the texture and brush strokes of the painting.

When considering framing bear in mind to not cover up the deckled edges. This is one of the specialties of the painting, one of its charms. It is best displayed framed with a cut mat board around the painting so as not to cover the edges, thereby putting some space between the art and the glass and bringing depth to the framed art. It can also be framed simply with backing board and pressed with glass over the front without causing damage.
Please note that you can purchase up to 3 paintings of this same size or smaller to be included in the same 1 shipping fee.
Packaging for my small paintings like this one is sealed in plastic sleeve, sealed in a padded hard plastic file case, and in an envelope.
