Small abstract painting on a birch wood panel. One thing I love about abstract painting is the ability to look deeper into things that aren't easily labeled. When I was younger, I would willingly take on labels, whether assigned to me by others, or ones that I took on for myself. Political affiliations, religious creeds, lifestyle choices, etc. As I get older, I find myself getting more resistant to taking on labels. Language isn't the only way to communicate or to explore. We don't need to be limited by it.
This painting is built up with layers of color and texture. The sides are painted gray so it is easy to display without a frame.
My abstract expressionist paintings are inspired by the more transient moments of life. Life is always moving. But the moments repeat so that the senses experience continuity. In layers of color and texture with a variety of movement and stream of consciousness mark making I communicate my experiences that can't be translated in words. My painting process involves working through different possibilities and as these resolve, the painting emerges with generous layers of color and texture.
