Original artwork description:

This unique ceramic sculpture is part of my 'Mechanical Space 2020' collection, which celebrates my interest in Victorian Industrial Art, 60s and 70s electronic equipment fused with Sci-Fi design and technology.

This piece is a view on hydraulics and ratchets giving the appearance of the orb being able to be raised by the knob on the front.

These pieces often start with a sketch, see images above (if still available), followed by production drawings if the form is complex which must of them are it's at this stage I work out stress and the construction technique. For ball shapes these are coiled, smoothed and then carved at the leather stage, if more box structure I will create slabs and build the piece and again carving as needed.
The piece is then air dried over a couple of weeks and then fired in my kiln. Depending on the finish required I will apply glazes and re-fired or acrylic and enamel paints will be applied.

If you have any questions or you would like to commission a piece please do not hesitate in contacting me via this site or through my web site.

Materials used:

Clay, carved and fired, raku fired and finished with acrylics and enamels
