So many reasons why this particular oil painting means much to me. The ‘palette’ is the darkest I’ve ever painted, so that was a challenge. I loved the way the pink shades moved around the surface of the composition — caught not only in the oak-leaf hydrangea blossoms but also in the small ginger jar adorned with roses, and of course, the interior of the conch shell. That shell has been in my family for more than a century: on the fireplace mantel of my grandparents' house, a memento of their honeymoon in 1919 and in my home for the past 30 years. The brown burn-out cloth, the pattern painted here suggestively, not in detail, belonged to a friend of mine and was a gift, as was the enormous bouquet of flowers. The vase itself was a gift from my daughter. And so I hope the painting itself is a gift to the person who acquires it, and that it will, in time, gather associations, that is, come to tell its story. The frame is wood, painted gold, ornate but not overpowering. This is painted on an archival quality Richeson panel, varnished, and with the frame the outside dimensions are 23x19x1.5. The color will keep for 500 years. Signed on the back and my insignia, an interlocking G&J, painted on the front. This is slight chipping to the frame, not visible from the front.
