This still life wasn't painted for art's sake, but for the sake of laughter! On the 8th of March, my wonderful husband congratulated me. He gave me a lovely gift and a bouquet of my favourite roses – what a treat! I used to make something delicious for the holiday, like a pie or cake. But this time I didn't want to stand at the cooker and cook something special, so we decided to have a fun, even funny holiday. It's a chance to try something different, something we don't get to do in our everyday lives. So, to make things fun and indulgent, we came up with the idea to have a little drink of cognac, snacking on lemon (following the rules) and smoked sausage (breaking the rules a little). We didn't have any lemon, but lime works just as well. We like to end the evening with a glass of good cognac and some grapes. But we just couldn't resist going a little bit wild, and that's how this unconventional still life came to be. It turned out to be a real treat, a good laugh, and a lot of fun. I took some pictures to share with my son, and then I decided to give it a go at painting. I went for a quick, relaxed approach, keeping the composition and colours simple. I just moved the vase of roses out of sight – that was all I needed to do.
