This plein air work was created during a 5-day watercolour painting workshop in Normandy which I participated in with other members of the Belgian watercolour institute. Having painted this town on two occasions as a skyline and backdrop to the bay (see the works “Le Crotoy from Cap Hornu”and “Baie de Somme”, also on Artfinder), I decided to take a closer look at the town with a view to painting some typical French buildings.
I liked this chateau-type building rather presumptuously placed between the more modest houses to the left and right. I was also attacted to the “house of hearts” which had a decorative heart hanging in every window and behind the glass of the front door. The different colours of the houses attracted me too - the pastel yellow of the house with the tower, the blue and pink of its neighbour and blue shutters of the house on the left, rounded off by a hint of red brick, which is most typical for the area, on the far right. And of course, because it's France, shutters, shutters, shutters!
So I set up my easel on the pavement of a little quiet street parallel to the beach looking into the Rue de l’ Église and painted this view, much to the entertainment of passers-by. Thanks to those, again, who changed my euro notes into loose change to feed the parking metre! Monet never had these problems!
