Hotel New York is actually located in the Dutch city of Rotterdam. Now a four-star hotel directly on the quay, the building formerly housed emigrants waiting for ships of the Holland Amerika Lijn to take them to the United States.
I painted the hotel on site in Rotterdam during a workshop with other watercolourists on the topic of architecture. While painting standing on the grass in front of the hotel, it was possible to enjoy the four-star service and have a glass of chilled wine and snacks as we worked!
I was attracted to this subject because I am fascinated by old buildings and their history and I loved the contrast between the stark, modern buildings in the background and the ornate building from 1917. Hotel New York is symbolic of the dream of a brighter future of the Dutch people who were leaving their homeland forever.

This unique artwork is sold mounted and accompanied by a certificate of authenticity signed by the artist.
