The nebula is located just to the south of the star Alnitak, which is farthest east on Orion's Belt, and is part of the much larger Orion Molecular Cloud Complex. Distance to Earth: 1,500 light years; Magnitude: 6.86. Right ascension: 5° 40' 59""8. Discovered: 1888- Williamina Fleming, Harvard. The same year as artist's Grandmother was born.
