There was an article in the Denver Post about building re-use in Boulder, Colorado. The subject didn't embed so much in my mind as did the image of a brick wall in the background. It had a muted, playful quality that got my attention. The bricks were purposefully, yet randomly painted with light, earthy pastels that faded, brick by brick, back into the plain, monotone color the last owner of the old building used, figuring it would go unnoticed.
I hadn't done a calculated, rectilinear painting like this in awhile, so I was enjoying being precise. As the layers of candy striped mortar and multi-colored brick units attained their own language of pattern, I realized that sequences of paint strokes felt like I was hopping randomly across the canvas with my paintbrush like a slow motion game of hopscotch.
Hopscotch Brick arrives prewired, ready to hang.
