The initial impulse to prepare the work “The Wall” appeared thanks to artificial intelligence. To be more precise, Google’s algorithms have provided me with artistic inspiration.
While viewing my photos online, using the usual Google search, I noticed that artificial intelligence skillfully displays my pictures of concrete walls. I was amazed at the ingenious way in which Google’s algorithms presented my wall pictures in a web browser. It was the moment when I decided to create an artistic work called “The Wall.”
Another spark of inspiration came from a completely different side. A few months after watching photos on Google, I rediscovered the album “The Wall” by Pink Floyd, once again in my life. Listening to songs from above Pink Floyd album is an unbelievable experience. While contemplating the music, I realized that the atmosphere of Pink Floyd album fully complements my project. The result is in front of your eyes.
The fact is that the wall, on the one hand, can protect people from danger.
One of the most amazing examples is in China. The Great Wall of China was supposed to protect the lands of the Chinese people against foreign invaders. Ever since humankind began to build cities, fortresses, and strongholds, the walls from the very beginning served as a refuge from the evil that lurks in the outside world. Behind a thick wall, people could often find the proverbial haven so that evil foreign powers could not reach them.
On the other hand, the wall is the fundamental construction part of the prison.
The fact is that almost everything and everyone can be enslaved: both behind the physical and the imaginary fence. Whatever absorbs us is our desire, fascination, or impulse: all of this can imprison us behind an illusory wall. Many people would say that even our body is a kind of prison. They would say that we are enslaved by a difficult barrier to overcome the body. Probably only death can free us from this kind of yoke.
When we are helpless, we say that we are banging our head against the wall.
It means that we have limited possibilities and that we are trying to overcome insurmountable difficulties. An imaginary wall that can imprison our souls can be found in the deepest recesses of our mind, imagination, and psyche. A fanciful, insurmountable inner fence can even separate us from the rest of society.
The idea of building a wall can also be a political weapon.
The latest examples are Donald Trump, the president of the United States, who uses the concept of creating a wall in his policy. It can prove to us that being behind a barrier for some people, on the one hand, can be a real desire, a synonym of a sense of security and happiness. At the same time for others, this wall can be a real nightmare, an insurmountable obstacle that can stop us on our way to a better life.
In summary, it depends mostly on us what kind of wall we will have in mind: it can be a wall as a synonym of security and a real shelter that gives us rest and relief. On the other hand, it can be a hostile, imaginary wall that is an obstacle in dealing with the outside world, which we can not overcome.
