Being from Mississippi, I have always enjoyed researching the lives of the early delta blues artists.
Edwards was born in Shaw, Mississippi. At the age of 14, he left home to travel with the bluesman Big Joe Williams, beginning life as an itinerant musician, which he maintained through the 1930s and 1940s. He described the itinerant bluesman's life:
"On Saturday, somebody like me or Robert Johnson would go into one of these little towns, play for nickels and dimes. And sometimes, you know, you could be playin' and have such a big crowd that it would block the whole street. Then the police would come around, and then I'd go to another town and where I could play at. But most of the time, they would let you play. "
Edwards recorded 15 album sides of music, including his songs "Wind Howlin' Blues" and "The Army Blues".
I have never been able to discover how he got the nickname "honeyboy".
This painting is a one-of-a-kind original work of art. It is produced using India ink and acrylic paint. I only sell original work so there will only be one original and no authorized copies will ever be made. The painting is signed on the front and comes with a signed certificate of authenticity.
"HONEYBOY" is painted on 4 mil. archival grade drafting mylar .The background has been digitally reproduced and laminated to the back of the mylar and then the portrait was painted over the background. The mylar is tough, waterproof, inert, flexible, dimensionally stable, and it does not have to be stretched, like canvas and watercolor paper.
This painting will be ready to hang, out of the box. It will be mounted on ½ inch thick foamboard with a two inch border all around. It will have a hanging strip on the back and I include a “monkey hook” for easy attachment to your wall.
