Original artwork description:

Homeless Man Carcassonne

It was a bitterly cold winters day in the old city of Carcassonne in the south of France. The wind was biting as I approached the entrance of this old city. The entrance, carved of old stone was full of people desperate to shop for presents for Christmas, yet it was an old man asleep that caught my attention. As often with my subjects I found the light shining on him almost demanding those ignorant to his status to look, to stare and to think. The man was drifting in and out of sleep and I engaged in conversation with him. He was particularly proud of his collection of books as well as some personal belongings that he kept in his carrier bag, his life bag. His books were his escape and I felt the shudder and sadness every time that he woke from his sleep as his realisation set in. It is this shudder and thud of sadness that I wanted to portray in my painting.
