Clan MacLeod is one of Scotland’s most celebrated Highland clans with close historical links with the Isle of Skye. There are two main branches of the clan: the Macleods of Dunvegan, and the MacLeods of Lewis.
Dunvegan Castle is one the greatest Hebridean castles and the only Highland fortress to have been continuously occupied by the same family for over 800 years.
Dunvegan Castle is the the only place still inhabited on this list of Isle of Skye castles.
For centuries the motto of the Clan MacLeod has been HOLD FAST. It is emblazoned above the bull’s head on the MacLeod crest.
The motto originates from Malcolm MacLeod (3rd Chief 1296-1370). On his way back from a clandestine meeting in Glenelg, Malcolm was confronted by a wild bull. As he wrestled with it, his clansmen who were nearby shouted ‘Hold Fast MacLeod’. He overcame the bull and dispatched it with his dirk. ‘Hold Fast’ has been the clan motto ever since.
