Limited Edition colour linocut of Herstmonceux Castle in East Sussex, an unusual brick castle with a moat around it.
This is a large linocut made using several carved blocks of lino, one for each colour. The ink is transferred to the paper by rubbing the back with a baren and a wooden spoon. (Takes a while!).
The actual print is 28cm wide and 37cm high (roughly A3 - so pretty big) and sold in a mount which brings the overall size to 40cm by 50cm - which is a common size and easy to frame.
Please note international orders will be posted without a mount and rolled in a tube with acid-free tissue.
This is a variable edition of 50, and, as always with linocuts, each print will vary slightly since they are produced by hand. Each print is numbered, titled and signed on the front by me, the artist.
Visitors can’t usually look inside Herstmonceux Castle as it belongs to a Canadian University, I believe. However, you can spend a happy few hours exploring the grounds which include woods and gardens. There is an impressive line of very old looking chestnut trees and a cafe. In the summer every year, the castle has a medieval festival at which you can see jousting and siege re-enactments. There are also a great many history enthusiasts camped out and wearing clothing of the era, who know all about various aspects of medieval life like archery, cooking and metalworking.
The castle is local to me, being between Hastings and Eastbourne.
