One of the first blossoms that we see in early spring are the long, slim catkins of the common hazel. With their yellowish colour, they catch our attention among the grey and brown branches of other still dormant bushes, heralding the fact that winter is finally coming to an end. I am a great fan of things that grow in the wild and I like to take them home, put them in a vase and study them for painting. When I do this, I often paint the subject as if it was back in the environment from which it came. These catkins were growing beside a farm track close to my home where I enjoy walking my dog. Beside the track, a large field sweeps up to the brow of a hill. In the painting, you can see the first shimmer of spring green as the field meets the horizon of blue sky.
“Hazel Catkins” is an original watercolour painted on Arches 300g rough watercolour paper using Windsor and Newton paints and is one of a series of catkin paintings (see also “Willow Catkins”). It comes with a white mount to fit a standard frame size of 40cm x 50cm and is accompanied by a certificate of authenticity signed by the artist.
