This is an alla prima oil study of hands after Bouguereau. Executed in grisaille (tones of grey obtained by mixing raw umber, black and white)
William-Adolphe Bouguereau was a French academic painter. In his realistic genre paintings, he used mythological themes, making modern interpretations of classical subjects, with an emphasis on the female human body. Bouguereau employed traditional methods of working up a painting, including detailed pencil studies and oil sketches, and his careful method resulted in a pleasing and accurate rendering of the human form. His painting of skin, hands, and feet was particularly admired.
Being trained in a classical atelier, I am a great admirer of Bouguereau's work. Looking at this old master's works gives me a goal to strive towards when it comes to rendering the human form.
