On a hot day in Texas, grackles were picking over the remains of diners’ lunches and eying up their next potential meal. Their calls are loud and varied and, somehow, these birds seem to have an air of intelligence about them. The scene of this photograph was very ordinary but the jet black feathers, metallic beak and piercing gaze of this grackle made it stand out from its surroundings, an exotic creature in our everyday world.
