This photograph was captured back in July 2010 while on a road trip travelling from Salt Lake City in Utah to Chicago Illinois. The photo is from the Great Salt Lake not far from the city centre of Salt Lake City. It’s a very stark landscape on the shore of the lake, especially under the mid summer sun and heat with the sharp wind that really makes you feel every grain of sand hitting you like tiny projectiles. It’s very misleading when looking at the surface of the shore – it appears very dry but it’s in reality quite muddy. It’s just a film of sand that’s been swept over the surface by the wind.
I found some various objects stuck in the sand – half buried (or maybe half resurrected after many years under the surface) and found these objects very contrasting to the stark surroundings. Especially this blue plastic container caught my eye as it was a rare glimpse of colour and a repeat of the blue of the sky. I kept the capture very high key to emphasise the hot, bright and windswept conditions - I also like the resulting minimalist simplicity of the image this creates.
Also available in other sizes:
139x203cm - edition of 10
