~Golden Plains~ 12x10 inch, Oil on Canvas
This small impressionist piece depicts the serene Wheatbelt region of Western Australia. In summer, the plains seem to stretch golden and forever, punctuated only by occasional irrigation channels or creeks.
This piece is a study into the connection between land and sky on these summer days. The upper portion of the painting is lightly painted, with wispish strokes emphasising the ephemeral tone of the sky; it's ability to contort and change to the conditions on the plains. The foreground is painted in an impasto style. Up close, the wheat is extremely textured and has incredible depth, but as the distance increases, the complexity of the composition fades, leading the eye to a distant mountain range, and the annex between sky and land.
