A traditionally painted traditional marine painting depicting the Golden Hind(e) which was the ship used by Francis Drake to circumnavigate the globe.
Shown here in October 1578 having survived a severe storm which had blown the small ship 300 miles south of Cape Horn. The only other ship still remaining on that voyage at that time, the Elizabeth had lost sight of the Golden Hind and returned to England.
Drake had originally set off from Plymouth, England in December 1577 with a fleet of 5 ships. At the start of the voyage the Golden Hind had been named the Pelican. However whilst off South America and following an earlier storm the ship was renamed in honour of Drake´s patron, Sir Christopher Hatton, his crest was a golden hinde. The Golden Hind was the only ship to complete the 3 year circumnavigation of the globe.
Marine painting in this style has always appealed to me and likewise my interest in history, particularly maritime history and the accompanying necessary research has influenced my choice of subject matter for many years.
This painting is supplied framed in a carefully selected bespoke hand finished frame and is ready to hang. Should you prefer to purchase unframed please contact me through the Artfinder messaging system, there would be modest reductions in the listed price and the charge made for shipping.
Please note that for some non UK destinations there may be import duty/tax liable. This is the responsibility of the purchaser (usually in the region of 5%). The shipping charge is the cost of getting the painting to you safely in a purpose built crate.
