I live on the coast in Sussex and find that the sea manages to work its way into many of my paintings, with or without my permission. This painting was meant to be more of a study of sky or even point in an heavenly direction, but it needed reworking in one section and thus the dynamic waves on the right.
I think this reflects my painting style generally. I try to paint calmly and patiently and then something rises up which must be released in a quick fashion. Van Gogh said that painting must be fast and even if one is applying many layers, there is always some element in mine which comes near the end which is either rapid or very bright colours. If you look at some of the other works, you will often find crimson on it and this is the same feeling as these waves: quick, passionate and unbridled. Therefore, this painting contains both elements of my soul: a measured upward glance to things beyond and an urgency in the present.
