This linocut shows the beautiful cobbled street of Gold Hill in Shaftesbury, Dorset. The street was famously used as the backdrop for a 1973 advert for Hovis bread. The ad, which has been voted Britain's favourite advertisement of all time was directed by Ridley Scott, and includes the distinctive music of Antonín Dvořák's Symphony No. 9.
This is an original reduction linocut print which I printed in an edition of just 12. This reduction linocut print is the fourth in a series of Dorset views I'm working. I've used warm colours including pale peach, lilac, soft red, oatmeal, chocolate brown and purple. I created two different versions of this Gold Hill print, with a difference to just one colour - this version is the one with a chocolate brown layer. This print is signed and titled along the bottom in pencil.
The tradition of linocut is a relief printing method in which pieces of lino are cut away using special carving tools to create a design. The lino block is then inked up using a roller, and printed onto paper either by hand or using a traditional printing press. It's an entirely manual process, so some slight differences in the prints are to be expected. Each of these prints is the result of one lino block being carefully carved and printed 7 times, each new colour after the previous layer has had several days to dry.
Approx image size: 15" x 11" (37.5 x 27cm)
This print is a perfect fit for a 40 x 50cm frame when mounted.
