I am facinated by patterns and shapes in nature and love the movement and forms of fish swimming in shoals. As with a lot of my relief pieces I like to have one piece (fish) in a different colour, to represent individuality, and this is no exception with one gold koi :)
First I created the watercolour koi in blues, and one in golds, and painted spirals on each fish in metallic watercolours. The blue ones have silver and the gold one has a shade of gold.
Each fish was then shaped and mounted on a small foam board plinth to enhance the three dimensional effect, which helps to cast interesting shadows depending on where the light is coming from.
I take a long time positioning my forms until I'm really happy with the whole, and then they are fixed to the backing watercolour paper sheet ready for framing. For this piece I've used sloping pieces of foam board as plinths to angle the koi upwards at the front so their heads are raised and their tails rest on the surface.
The whole piece is framed in a glazed (perspex) deep box frame.
Bespoke colour combinations and sizes are available so please message me if you have any questions regarding a commission :)
