I am facinated by patterns and shapes in nature and love the movement and forms of fish swimming in shoals. As with a lot of my relief pieces I like to have one form (fish) in a different colour, and this is no exception:)
First I created two watercolour paintings of different patterns and shapes, one in blues, greens and aqua, and the other in oranges. As well as watercolours, I've also used Posca pens and gold ink.
The paintings were then hand cut into four different size fish shapes and rounded to create a three dimensional effect.
Each fish also has a Nazar amulet painted on it which is an eye-shaped amulet believed to protect against the evil eye.
A typical nazar is made of handmade glass featuring concentric circles or teardrop shapes in dark blue, white, light blue and black, occasionally with a yellow/gold edge.
It is a common sight in places such as Greece, Cyprus, Turkey, India, Morocco, Tunisia, where it is often hung in homes, offices, cars, children's clothing, or incorporated in jewellery and ornaments.
Each fish is mounted on a small foam board plinth to enhance the three dimensional effect and this helps to cast interesting shadows depending on where the light is coming from.
I take a long time positioning my forms until I'm really happy with the whole, and then they are fixed to plain, heavy watercolour paper ready for framing.
The whole piece is framed in a glazed (perspex) wooden deep box frame.
Bespoke colour combinations and sizes available from £300. Please message me if you have any questions :)
