40” x 30” (101 cm x 76 cm) oil on stretched canvas.
On this occasion the sitter sent me a very ‘normal’ head and shoulders shot. I felt it was too conventional a pose from someone who appeared not to be conventional herself and asked for a different photograph. Perhaps frustrated by my request, she sent me what she intended to be a ‘silly’ pose, craning her head to look up at the camera.
It was perfect.
I am interested in how background can tell us something about the sitter without resorting to detail. The specific shade of green is her favourite colour, the gold metallic emphasises this young woman’s poise.
