The source of inspiration for this painting was some arum lilies at home standing in a glass of water. Although I thought that they would make a beautiful painting composition wise in their own right, I felt at the time that I wanted to create more of a narrative. I had an urge to include a figure in the painting with a dramatic light source and, liquid tonal brush strokes creating a lucid, enigmatic atmosphere. After a few weeks of working on small, delicate etchings or designs on lampshades - usually of organic subject matter, I was compelled to work more figuratively and smoothly in oils on a fairly large scale compared with the small and linear way I usually worked.
