I saw the most beautiful photo of Barbara Hepworth at the beginning of her career, looking out to sea. It was a haunting pose, a girl at the start of her life and I felt I wanted to paint a picture that had that very same feeling.
So I persuaded my granddaughter to model for me, and she was very patient. I added a dog because she loves the family dog.
I painted this in many layers, rendering the early morning sky with a subtle mixture of turquoise, blues and violet.
