I've always liked the expression 'To Gild the Lily.'
It comes from the derivation of Shakespeare's verse, and expresses the very human
impulse to over embellish or improve something unnecessarily.
I think we've all been there!

"To gild refined Gold, to paint the Lily, to throw perfume on the Violet, to smooth Ice, or add another hue to the Rainbow."
