Original artwork description:

"Gethsemane" is a dramatic, slashing abstract in a high-contrast palette of black, white & red, which is named for the grove of olives in which Jesus suffered and prayed on the night He was betrayed and arrested. For believers everywhere, the word itself evokes an emotional response. The painting began as a collage of painted pieces, including passages from each of the four gospels (Mark 14, Matthew 26, Luke 22 and John 18). The central element of the painting is a piece of cardboard, cut in the shape of a spike, which has been partially torn, revealing the corrugation beneath, creating literal piercings in the surface. This spiked form repeats and intersects, creating a cruciform composition, in keeping with the looming Cross and the hill of Golgotha, which was in sight from the Mount of Olives, where the grove of Gethsemane remains to this day. A satin varnish has been applied, and hanging hardware is already installed.

Materials used:

Scripture passages, acrylic paint, oil paint, cold wax on canvas
