Gerberoy is a beautiful little village north of Paris filled with timber framed houses. The siege and battle of Gerberoy was fought between William the Conqueror and his son Robert Curthose in the winter of 1078-79.
To wander round its streets, is to find yourself lost and absorbed in a different era. A year after finishing the painting I discovered the artist Henri Le Sidaner had painted many views of Geberoy, including one of this house. He must have stood in almost exactly the same spot 100 years prior. Almost nothing in the scene has changed to this present day.
The painting has been done on canvas in an alla prima style.
It is framed in an American styled frame where the canvas sits inside the frame from the front (rather than the back). It is made from quality wood and finished in a black satin finish.
oil paints (Rembrandt, W&N, Old Holland), Brushes (hogs hair, sable)
