The commune of Gentilly adjoins Montrouge and the southern side of the city of Paris. It has traditionally been a place of goldsmiths and coin mintage. The famous street photographer Robert Doisneau was born here and a local museum celebrates his work and that of other humanist photographers. One of his most famous photographs was 'The kiss by the Hôtel de Ville'. On a recent visit to London I was amused to see a couple re-staging the photograph at Tower Bridge. Doisneau said, “The marvels of daily life are exciting; no movie director can arrange the unexpected that you find in the street.”
