Original artwork description:

‘The artist should fear to become the slave of detail. He should strive to express his thought and not the surface of it. What avails a storm cloud accurate in form and color if the storm is not therein?’

Pinkham Ryder

Highly appropriate quote I think. Ok, I’ve never heard of him or her either, but abstraction is one of the cornerstones of a successful painting, (or else you might as well just use a camera – it’s way easier!) There are several others, but here the concept, if you like, is the sense of the impending display of an awesome and beautiful storm which will inevitably arrive from somewhere ‘over there’ and manifest itself in your part of the universe for the enjoyment of all.

So, I try not to get into the detail of the clouds and accurate form (drawing), and concentrate on the feel of the chaos against the previously calm evening sky, and the impending violence and energy caught up in the warmer colours of the cauldron on it’s way.

Please note that this painting is sold unframed…. I included the image of it in one to give you an idea of the possibilities of how it might look in your home.

Materials used:

oil paint
