In the Christmas of 1989 or 1990, I received an original Nintendo Game Boy as my main present, and I was ecstatically happy with it. My family probably didn't get much attention out of me throughout the entire holiday, with me being engrossed in Tetris and Super Mario Bros. I was obsessed.
Fast forward to me being an adult and I still love retro computer games and 90s designs, and so I chose to recreate the original Game Boy as a painting in my signature pop art style. I love revisiting beloved retro items from my past, much as my hero Andy Warhol did with his Campbell's soup cans.
Here the Game Boy is presented straight on, with some of its features simplified, including a suggestion of a game of Tetris on the screen drawn with a shiny gold Posca pen giving it a shimmering screen-like effect (see the video).
This is part of a series of works done on standard UK paper size A5, hence the lower price. The series depicts smaller, more detailed objects. It comes unframed on high quality paper, but I've taken photos of the piece in a white frame for display purposes.
I love presenting items in a simple, pop art style, opting for graphic impact rather than realism. The object is here set against my often used sky blue background.
