This piece involves a new journey in the world of Maximalism, in the form of a triptych mural that fuses more figurative elements of a samurai with a barrage of mixed media, paints, and gold leaf to create an organic/inorganic experience. The central theme is the journey of the Solar Samurai, from the celestial plane to dimensions and time beyond. The detailed landscape, which consists of shooting stars, multi-layered shapes, and vibrant colors, sets the tone for a more expansive view into the world of Maximalism. In addition, new shapes are introduced in this painting such as seven-sided stars, samurai symbols, etc.
The process for composing this piece was extremely involved. First, the conceptual sketch was composed, detailing the overall structure and flow. Next, color codes were assigned to each and every shape. After this phase, certain shapes in the conceptual design were cut and painted, in addition to other shapes being designed graphically. The process for painting the piece involved carefully arranging the various array of media with the painted portions of the canvas for surgical precision. Several layers of various paints were applied to the MDF panels in both structured and “free-form” methods. This piece serves as an example of the various levels that can be achieved by applying various techniques or approaches to the world of Maximalism. In addition, this piece serves as different viewpoint of Maximalism and the infinite possibilities to come.
Varies - mixed media, acrylic, gouache and composite paints
