This painting shows a traditional Gaff Cutter sailing passed Hurst Castle which is one of the forts built by Henry VIII. Hurst Castle was later enlarged during the Napoleonic wars to guard the eastern entrance of the Solent. The Solent is a stretch of water between Hampshire and the Isle of Wight off the coast of southern England. The old and the new are familiar sights in the Solent today, hence the modern yacht in the distance. The painting has gold frame with a canvas slip.
