Depicted here are vines above Beaune, Burgundy, during a hard frost in winter. The frost touches the tips and tops of the vegetation with white but many of the colours underneath remain.
This is an oil painting on canvas, using the glacis method of painting very thin, although increasingly thicker, layers of colour over each other. Sometimes it is a pure yellow underneath a pure blue to create the green. It provides a richness and depth to the colours. The untrimmed shoots of the vines have been scraped into the paint.
The edges of the canvas are painted black to enable it to be hung without a frame.
