A painting about the gravity of choice and the price we are willing to pay for our future and freedom. The golden castle symbolizes home; it resembles a child’s castle made of cubes, as it is during childhood that our love for home is born. However, this house also represents a “golden cage”—we see how its shine obscures empty promises. The house is on fire, and despite its grim fate, it is difficult to let go of the memories associated with it. The girl can free herself from the toad sitting on her shoulders at any moment, but in doing so, she would lose her home. This difficult decision is linked to loss, tied to giving up everything familiar and dear. Thus, the girl continues to sit in the dark swamp of emptiness, preparing to make her choice.
