A painting about the severity of choice and the price we are willing to pay for our future and freedom.
The golden castle here symbolizes home. It is reminiscent of a child's castle made of cubes, as it is in childhood that our love for home is born. However, this house also represents a “golden cage” - we see how its shine hides empty promises. The house is on fire, and despite its grim fate, it is hard to let go of the memories of it. The girl can get rid of the toad sitting on her shoulders at any time, but in doing so she will lose her home. This difficult decision is associated with loss, with giving up everything familiar and dear. So the girl continues to sit in the dark swamp of emptiness, preparing to make a choice.
