IN THE CIRCLE OF LOVE
My story about lost identity starts from my birth location. I was born in Luhansk a city near to Russian border. All my childhood I heard from my parents We are not Ukrainian. But in fact, we also were not Russian. At a mature age, I found my identity in belonging to Ukrainian culture and realized this colossal mistake from my childhood.
Russia tried to deprive us of the roots of our people but it could not uproot the ancient oaks. Just as oaks sprout deep in the ground, the people are tightly bound within their culture and tradition.
A person is always stronger and happier within his people, but an empire does need strong-willed people. Therefore the cradle of Ukrainian culture was destroyed by the hand of the empire. The people were deprived of their voice and deprived of belonging to their community.
When the war started I did not know how to find my own place in the modern Ukrainian World because I thought I am not the correct Ukrainian, because my native language is Russian and my family calls themselves Russian.
But identity is not lost if there are small seeds from old oaks.
I realized that identity is also an effort of will and a decision. And that in cultivating myself in Ukrainian culture I will find my own self.
I also realized that personal identity must prevail above national identity because we have always personal responsibility.
Now I explore all these questions for me. How can I find my place in Ukrainian society, what is meant to be an entire person in the culture, how to save independence inside the culture, and how to hear my own voice in pandemonium meanings?
